20,000 Trees

Wow! It’s exciting to share the news of our hedgerow planting project this winter and you’re invited to join in!

We’ve been awarded a Farming in Protected Landscapes (FiPL) grant to provide 4022m of new hedgerow trees around the farm.  So, depending on how you think of distance; that’s 4+km or 2.499 miles and we’ll be planting more than 20,000 native hedgerow trees!

Defra has developed the FiPL fund which enables farmers to apply for support with projects that mitigate climate change, support nature recovery, provide opportunities for people to discover, enjoy and understand the landscape and cultural heritage and support nature-friendly, sustainable farming businesses.

Hedgerows are great for biodiversity; they provide food, shelter, habitat and vital corridors or safe routes for wildlife to travel along and they help to link existing habitats such as woodlands and ponds.  They’re part of the climate change solution as they absorb and store carbon dioxide in the soil and support the amazing pollinators needed for crop production.

Hedges protect and improve soil health and are part of our heritage and the local tapestry of our landscape.

Several voluntary groups are joining us in February and March 2022 to help plant the native tree species which include Hawthorn, Guelder Rose, Crab Apple, Hazel, Spindle and Field Maple.

It feels so positive, particularly considering the past two years, being able to encourage greater community involvement in this farmed landscape of the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB).

Manor Farm is hosting a hedge planting event suitable for individuals, families and friends on Saturday 19th February 2022 in partnership with the Surrey Hills Society and the Surrey Hills Trust Fund.
